The fashion industry wastes roughly 79 billion cubic meters of water each year. That’s the equivalent of 21 million Olympic swimming pools. From low-quality GMO cotton production diverting much-needed water from surrounding communities to wash and dye houses that pollute our waterways and oceans to massive fabric waste in production houses, it didn’t take long for us to see that our industry had some significant problems.
As part of our ongoing mission to minimize the environmental impact of everything we do, we’ve transitioned to 99% organic cotton (which uses a fraction of the water), worked only with suppliers who have GOTS certification to ensure safe, ethical, non-toxic practices at our wash and dye houses, and maintained a focus on building clothes that get better with age.
From there, we continued exploring creative ways to further our initiative towards environmental Responsibility. A few years of R&D later, our Heavy Bag material was born.
What is Heavy Bag?
In production houses, clothing patterns are cut out of giant fabric rolls, and the leftover odds and ends fall to the cutting room floor. Usually, these scraps would be destined for the landfill, but with our Heavy Bag material, their journey is just beginning.
We gather up the scraps, clean them, shred them, and re-spin them into fresh new fibers. By blending these upcycled cotton fibers with recycled polyester, we’ve achieved a seriously durable yet supple jersey that ages beautifully over the course of years, not seasons.
Why Choose Heavy Bag?
With a soft, burly hand feel, a natural texture, and a wrinkle-resistant drape, our Heavy Bag lineup represents the heaviest—and toughest—basics in our roster. Beyond being a hard-wearing homage to old-school heavyweight tees, these timeless garments are a powerful counter-punch against the egregious waste of fast fashion, throwaway culture, and fleeting trends.
So, if you’re looking to waste less, love your clothes for longer, and build a wardrobe that will endure the tides of time, our Heavy Bag Tees, Henleys, and Crewnecks are a great place to start.
